Book: Cupcake Brown "A Piece of Cake"

Cupcake's best-selling memoir, A Piece Of Cake is now at book stores everywhere. The memoir is an inspirational story of a young girl lost in the system and left to fend for herself and forced to survive on her own in any way that she could, which she did through prostitution, drugs, alcohol, gangs, violence, and crime. Ultimately, through the encouragement of those who recognized her abilities and worth, and their continued support until she too began to recognize those qualities herself, she completely turns her life around. A Piece Of Cake is a gut-wrenching story of hopelessness, despair, validation, and ultimate success.

Financier charged with $9.2B fraud

The Securities and Exchange Commission alleges that Robert Allen Stanford orchestrated a scheme centered on a CD program.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday that it has charged financier R. Allen Stanford and three of his companies with orchestrating a $9.2 billion investment and sales fraud.

The SEC's complaint alleges that the fraud centered on a CD program in which Stanford International Bank promised "improbable and unsubstantiated high interest rates."

SIB, based in Antigua, allegedly acted through a network of Stanford Group Company financial advisers to sell approximately $8 billion of "certificates of deposit" to investors.

The SEC's complaint also alleged an additional scheme relating to $1.2 billion in sales.

The bank boasted a unique investment strategy that it said allowed it to receive double-digit returns on its investments for the past 15 years, the SEC said.

"We are alleging a fraud of shocking magnitude that has spread its tentacles throughout the world," Rose Romero, director of the SEC's Fort Worth regional office, said in the statement.

The SEC also charged Stanford International's chief financial officer James Davis as well as Laura Pendergest-Holt, chief investment officer of Stanford Financial Group. The third company named in the complaint is investment adviser Stanford Capital Management.

According to the release, U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor issued a temporary restraining order, and froze the defendants' assets.

SEC: Stanford ignored subpoena
Stanford, Davis, and SIB board member O.Y. Goswick did not respond to recent subpoenas seeking their testimony, according to court papers cited by Reuters.

"None of these witnesses appeared for testimony or produced a single document," the SEC said , according to Reuters.

Early Tuesday, CNBC reported federal marshals were seen entering the offices of Stanford Financial Group in Houston. Reuters reported an eyewitness saw a sign taped to the window stating the company is now "under the management of a receiver."

Alleged false financial claims
According to the SEC's complaint, filed in federal court in Dallas, the defendants told CD purchasers that their deposits were safe, falsely claiming that the bank re-invests client funds primarily in the portfolio; monitors the portfolio through a team of more than 20 analysts; and is subject to yearly audits by Antiguan regulators.

Amid the news of Bernard Madoff's massive Ponzi scheme, SIB falsely claimed the bank has no "direct or indirect" exposure to the Madoff scheme, the statement said.

Stanford's inner circle
According to the SEC's complaint, a close circle of Stanford's family and friends operates SIB.

Its investment committee, responsible for managing the bank's multibillion-dollar portfolio of assets, includes Stanford; Stanford's father, who lives in Mexia, Tex.; another Mexia resident with business experience in cattle ranching and car sales; Pendergest-Holt, who had no financial or securities experience prior to joining SFG; and Davis, Stanford's college roommate.

SIB's Web site claims its network has $51 billion in deposits and assets under management or advisement, with more than 70,000 clients in 140 countries.

$20 million cricket match
In September, Forbes named Stanford No. 205 in its 400 Richest Americans article. He's used some of his billions to spark interest in cricket.

In 2006, he founded the "Stanford 20/20 Tournament," a single-elimination knockout cricket competition held in Antigua featuring 20 teams from several Caribbean territories competing for $1 million.

Stanford topped that in 2008 with the "Stanford Super Series," in which four teams competed for $20 million - the largest team prize for a single sporting match, according to the series' Web site.

An additional scheme
The SEC accused Stanford Group Company with an additional scheme relating to $1.2 billion in sales. It is alleged that SGC advisers used materially false historical performance data to create a mutual fund program called Stanford Allocation Strategy, the release said.

According to the complaint, the false data helped grow the program from less than $10 million in 2004 to more than $1 billion, generating SGC - and ultimately, Stanford - about $25 million in 2007 and 2008.

That fraudulent performance helped recruit registered investment advisers, who were then given heavy incentives to move their clients' assets to SIB's CD program, the release said.

Stanford Financial Group could not immediately be reached for comment.

Solange Knowles Hospitalized While Twitting

R&B star SOLANGE KNOWLES was admitted to hospital when she collapsed after downing flu pills on a flight out of New York on Tuesday night (17Feb09).

Beyonce's younger sister was treated by medics after taking the capsules onboard a plane and suffering an adverse reaction to the medication.
Her muddled mental state was laid bare in a series of bizarre postings on social networking website Twitter.com which she uploaded during the journey.

But three hours into the trip, her messages suddenly stopped after she complained of feeling sleepy - and three hours later she logged back on to the website to tell fans: "Woaah...... How'd I end up in the hospital?"

Knowles is believed to have been heading back to her home in Los Angeles after attending the opening of an Armani store in New York on Tuesday evening.
In a series of Twitter postings during the flight, she told fans how she had swallowed NyQuil tablets to treat a cold.

She wrote: "I took a nyquil and i think maybe im getting high off it because im not sleeping. maybe i should close my eyes..."

Minutes later she added, "think im certified loosing (sic) it on nyquil. going to sleep before i start freestyling on the plane... omg (Oh my God) i didnt know nyquil could do this to you. i took the pills tho. cant stomach cough syrup. trying to be proactive on this flight."

She then added: "Never taking nyquil again. I feel so weird."
The singer left further apparently random messages about various musicians and having "freezing" feet, before a break of three hours.

She then logged on again to tell how she had woken up on the floor of an airport surrounded by medics - but was later given the all-clear after her mother visited her in hospital.

The star wrote: "Woaah...... How'd I end up in the hospital? Woke up to 8 random people over me, laid out on the floor in baggage claim!... Guess I passed out! Scary. Hooked up to IV now . Apparantly I'm super dehydrated.

"I've never passed out before. S**t was like the movies. People standing over me saying 'hello'... My mom is the best. LOL (laugh out loud). She's like 'Ain't nothing wrong with this girl, she need some water and rest... Pull up the car!' LOL
"I'm like still in shock. I've never passed out before. Think it was the nyquil too. I felt weird when I woke up. This has been the day from hell. I'm done with the second IV. I just want to get in the bed and lay with (son) Julez. That's all I want."

The singer later confirmed she had been released from hospital following treatment, writing: "I'm out! yay!... they let me go..... Rest. Water. Rest. Water."

Rapper Tasered & Arrested at NBA All-Star Party

AllHipHop.com reports:

"Rapper Kid Cudi has been involved in an altercation that has resulted in the Cleveland native being tasered and apprehended by authorities, according to multiple sources.

Detail are sketchy, but the rapper apparently was involved in a fight or altercation while at the Reebok party in Phoenix, Arizona. Much of the music industry is in the city celebrating the NBA's popular All-Star weekend.

Eyewitnesses stated that Kid Cudi physically and verbally confronted a pair of Reebok employees. The artist was booked by the apparel company to perform at the venue.

Sources said that Cudi wanted to wear Jordan sneakers on stage, a move that did not agree with the people of Reebok.

Authorities intervened after the confrontation escalated and Cudi was tasered, a move to control his behavior.

The rapper was presumed arrested by police, but actual charges have not been revealed.

A representative for Kid Cudi was not available at press time.

Allen Iverson, a Reebok endorsed athlete, attended the party."

Cowboys Tight End Can Rock a Rhyme

Martellus Bennett Reveals His Big Secret

by DELANO WASHINGTON/QuickDFW

In last week’s edition of the Sure Shot, we teased the identity of the rapper Marty B. He’s appeared on Tum Tum’s remixed “Girlfriend” and other tracks along side local rap dignitaries. Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett (right) is indeed the rhymer in question. The first-year player, who caught four touchdowns in his debut season as a Cowboy, is no rookie whenit comes to the microphone red zone.

“I’ve been rapping ever since I can remember” says Bennett, who famously recorded the song “Throw Me the Ball Coach” during hisTexas A&M college days.

“I’m not the best rapper alive, but you will hear a lot of hits thatyou’ll like.”

He flows with a Southern lean and a hint of East Coast vibe. The catchy lead cut, “Google Me,” from Marty B’s upcoming Collective Bargaining mix tape, is already being streamed at myspace.com/currency3.

Bennett’s foray into rap hasn’t been met with all positive reviews. There’s been some controversy this week over aYouTube video in which he unleashed a profanity-laden freestyle. But Cowboys fans shouldn’t worry too much about Bennett getting distracted by the music or the hoopla surrounding it.

“I’m just doing this for fun,” he told us.“Football and the Dallas Cowboys are priority along with God, family and friends."

Usher's Wife Suffered Cardiac & Respitory Arrest

Per the gossip guru Perez Hilton:

"The Usher camp won't utter a word about the condition of Mrs. Usher, Tameka Foster, but the Brazilian media has been able to uncover a few details.

Reports say Mrs. Usher was rushed into intensive care on Friday, after a medical emergency during a liposuction operation Sao Paolo.

She supposedly suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest as she was being anesthetized for the cosmetic surgery.

The LA neurosurgeon who was flown to Brazil to tend to Foster left the country on Monday and refused to answer questions from reporters assembled outside of the hospital.

Scary stuff.

If you're going to have any plastic surgery work done, make sure you do extensive research on your doctors, bb's. It's your life in their hands!!!"

"Lift Every Voice" - In Celebration Of Black History Month

R&B singer Kim Weston sings "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" in front of a 100,000 at Wattstax--a festival at the Los Angeles Coliseum on August 20, 1972 organized by the Memphis Stax label to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the Watts riots and black power, pride, culture, tradition and heritage struggle.

The party and peacefulness was seen by some as "African Americans answer to Woodstock". Be it charity or benefit, in order to encourage as many members of the black Americans community in LA to attend the event at Memorial Coliseum, tickets were sold at $1.00 each. Customs included advertisements and commercials in play for the event. There have been several recordings from this festival and a documentary film. It was a celebration to upstage all celebrations. Reverend Jesse Jackson gave the invocation, which included his "I Am - Somebody" poem, which was recited in a call and response with the assembled stadium crowd. There was a film directed by Mel Stuart which was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Documentary in 1974.

More on the song:
Lift Ev'ry Voice And Sing is often called "The Negro National Anthem" (or Black National Anthem)—was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) and then set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson (1873-1954) in 1900. It was first performed in public in the Johnsons' hometown of Jacksonville, Florida as part of a celebration of Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, 1900 by a choir of 500 schoolchildren at the segregated Stanton School, where James Weldon Johnson was principal.

Singing this song quickly became a way for African Americans to demonstrate their patriotism and hope for the future. In calling for earth and heaven to "ring with the harmonies of Liberty," they could speak out subtly against racism and Jim Crow laws — and especially the huge number of lynchings accompanying the rise of the Ku Klux Klan at the turn of the century. In 1919, the NAACP adopted the song as "The Negro National Anthem." By the 1920s, copies of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" could be found in black churches across the country, often pasted into the hymnals.

During and after the American Civil Rights Movement, the song experienced a rebirth, and by the 1970's was often sung immediately after The Star Spangled Banner at public events and performances across the United States where the event had a significant African-American population.

In 1990, singer Melba Moore released a modern rendition of the song, which she recorded along with others including R&B artists Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Dionne Warwick, Bobby Brown, Stevie Wonder, Jeffrey Osborne, and Howard Hewett; and gospel artists BeBe and CeCe Winans, Take 6 and The Clark Sisters. Partly because of the success of this recording, Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing was entered into the Congressional Record as the official African American National Hymn.

More on singer Kim Weston:
Kim Weston born December 20, 1939 in Detroit Michigan is a Motown Records alumna. She made an album for the label This Is America which included her popular version of the Black National Anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was released as a single and featured in the movie Wattstax. All the money from the single was donated to the United Negro College Fund.

Quiet As It's Kept Exclusive: Legendary RnB Artist Has Cancer

What's up ya'll! I was hit with information that has deeply saddens me, but a legendary R&B artist will be formally announcing next week to having cancer.

I can't reveal who it is just yet, because I'm not wanting to get the record execs all pissed off. Plus, this artist's spouse can be a REAL trip!

Anywho, what little I can reveal is that this person does have plans of being a spokesperson on behalf of cancer.

Cancer is NO joke! Just the whole thing from having it, the treatment and the overall effects. I've had two members of my family die from cancer. So, if you could please say a silent prayer for ALL those suffering with cancer.

I most certainly, will leak the info the night before the announcement....."quiet as it's kept"

EXCLUSIVE: John Forte + Talib Kweli - "Homecoming"(video)

Talib Kweli is my most favorite rapper. I just never get enough of the MCEO!! Recently, he teamed up in the studio with his close friend John Forte, to celebrate John's homecoming.

For those who don't know, John Forte(fmr Fugees collaborator) was pardoned from a 14yr prison sentence by Fmr. President Bush before leaving office. This was probaby one of Bush's best actions as a President...IMOP!

To me not only does this video celebrate John being released, but it celebrates the rejoining of two friends. What this video reflects to me is respect, love and true friendship.

So you see, it's stuff like this that Kweli does which makes me truly admire/respect him as an artist and a man.

WELCOME HOME JOHN FORTE!!!

Mitchy Slick (From Strong Arm Steady Feat. Wrongkind) - He'll Shoot

New video from my homie Mitchy Slick

Having recently been released from WMG, my man Mitchy was like "uck it" they were not going to stop his grind. So he went back to the basics....he took it to the streets.

I like this video, not just because Mitchy is my friend, but because it's REAL. It's a true messege for the streets. Yes, some of you may say "it's just too hardcore" that "the music industry is trying to move away from gangsta rap", that's all good. But at the end of the day, as we all know there are still gangstas out there who need guidance and that's just what my man has done.

Gangsta rap aint going away, the means of how the masses are exposed to it has just changed. You know it's like bey bey's kids....they don't die...
they just multiply!!

Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but not only is this a celebration of his life, it is also a celebration of a new life...a new era.

I know many will post Dr. Kings "I Have A Dream" speech, but I chose his last speech because it has always been the one that, I've identifed with the most. I'm not really certain why this speech has moved me so much. Maybe it's because he foreseen his end nearing, or maybe because in this speech I always knew that we would someday "see the mountain top...the promised land". What amazes me the most is how true this dream has become.

Tomorrow our nation will swear in its 44th President Barack Obama. A black man, who brings hope and unity to this country and the world.

So, Happy Birthday Dr. King! Thank you for your foresight...your strength....your ideas, and your wisdom.

Dreams really do come true!!!

The rapper’s headphones will feature amplified bass for consumers.

President-elect Barack Obama said on Wednesday he would accept Roland Burris as his replacement in the Senate, following the lead of Senate Democrats who have softened their opposition to the candidate chosen by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

"This is a Senate matter. But I know Roland Burris, obviously; he's from my home state. I think he's a fine public servant. If he gets seated then I'm going to work with Roland Burris, just like I work with all the other senators," Obama said at a press conference at his transition headquarters.

Obama, on just his fourth day in Washington, refused again to discuss the ongoing violence in the Middle East, saying there are "institutional constraints" preventing him from weighing in while President Bush is still in office. But, drawing a distinction between foreign and domestic policy, Obama put down clear markers on his economic plan. He appointed Nancy Killefer as his first chief performance officer, a new position designed to make the federal government more efficient.
Obama said Killefer is "uniquely qualified" for the task, given her business sector background streamlining workplace processes and seeking inefficiencies that can be eliminated. He said she had "worked tirelessly" to encourage creativity and initiative among employees in the past, and said he would encourage his cabinet officials and other administration managers to meet with Killefer.

Killefer spoke after Obama, saying she was "deeply honored" to become the first person to hold the position, and acknowledged that the task of bringing about greater efficiencies would take time. "The people who deliver those services, the government employees themselves, will be central to this effort," she said, echoing Obama's remarks that the federal work force itself would be the key to enhancing government performance.

Surgeon Who Operated On Kanye West's Mother Receives One Year Jail Sentence

Dr. Jan Adams, the plastic surgeon responsible for operating on Kanye West's mother in November 2007, has been sentenced to a year behind bars for drinking and driving.

The popular celebrity plastic surgeon reportedly pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count and accepted his jail time.

Solano County Superior Court Commissioner Ray Wieser handed down the sentence in Vallejo Monday morning after Adams' defense counsel, Michael Cardoza, told the court that Adams did not want probation but was prepared to serve straight jail time for the offense. Wieser subsequently sentenced Adams to one year in Solano County Jail with credit for eight days previously served in custody.

Execution of sentence was stayed until 8:30 a.m. Feb. 6 to allow Adams time to address a probation violation case in Los Angeles. (Daily Democrat)

Adams' frequent records of drunken driving were allegedly considered in the sentencing, including his most recent arrest last summer.

According to the CHP, officers saw Adams' 2004 gray Jag XJ8 driving the wrong way up an off ramp on the 680 freeway just outside Benicia, Calif., just about a half hour from Oakland. After failing a field sobriety test, he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, driving the wrong way and driving on a suspended license.

This is Adams' third DUI arrest since 2003. (TMZ)

Police were reportedly contacted and told of the famous doctor's reckless driving when he was going in the opposite direction of traffic, which led to his arrest.

Authorities were alerted when motorists had called in to report the driver of a gray Jaguar going the wrong way on the freeway.

Adams also was arrested for driving on a suspended license from a March 2006 DUI conviction. (Associated Press)

In addition to his frequent arrests, the doctor also recently lost his California medical license stemming from late child support payments.

Adams was notified in a letter from the California Department of Consumer Affairs on May 21st which said he had 30 days to pay his child support to prevent from losing his license to practice. Failing to do so resulted in him losing his right to legally operate in the state. A rep from the Medical Board released a statement yesterday confirming the loss.

Hughes Brothers' Pimp Drama Under Fire By City Of Oakland

The Hughes Brothers’ latest project Gentlemen of Leisure has come under fire by city officials who worry about the effect the new HBO drama will have on the world’s view of Oakland.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the controversy is putting the new show’s shooting location in jeopardy, as members of the Oakland City Council and others debate whether or not to approve a film permit for the production.

Originally announced in July, Gentlemen of Leisure follows the life of a legendary Oakland pimp, as he struggles to leave the hustle.

The series, written by Evan Reilly, delves into the overall hustlers’ subculture by examining the conflict between old-school pimps and the younger guys whose approach incorporates the violence of the drug culture.

The City of Oakland’s concern is that the show will take advantage of the negative reputation already associated with the Bay Area hub and create an environment that will lead to the further exploitation of women.

That image would stand in exact opposition of Mayor Ron Dellums’ plan to create a “model city.”

The Hughes brothers, however, argue that their aim is to do for Oakland what The Wire did for the city of Baltimore by staying as true to reality as possible.

“It’s The Wire meets The Sopranos set in Oakland in a crime element never used before,” Allen Hughes told The San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s not just about pimps and prostitutes, but also about the history of a city that never got it’s due. Like Detroit or Miami and a lot of other cities, Oakland is steeped in heavy street industry, in rackets. I’m just going to say it, Oakland is a pimpin’ town. It’s flourished there. And whenever and wherever street life is celebrated, the city gets a shout out.”

In previous interviews about the project, Allen Hughes explained that Gentlemen of Leisure would be a departure from the traditional portrayal of pimp culture and would explore the human conditions it creates.

“This isn’t something we take lightly and we’re not doing a show about a tawdry pimp,” Hughes added recently. “The city is the star of the show, and characters spring forth from that.”

Even if they are denied permission to shoot in Oakland, the Hughes Brothers plan on starting production on Gentlemen of Leisure in the fall.

The show is executive produced by Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine and Polly Anthony for Interscope’s TV unit.

Iovine has voiced his interest in tying the drama heavily to Hip-Hop music.

    Queen Latifah Returning To Rap

Queen Latifah is headed back to where she started—rapping. The Oscar-nominated actress will depart from her last two jazz albums and return to her roots with her first hip-hop album in 11 years, scheduled for release in March.

“The last two albums have been kinda jazzy, standards, eclectic, but this one is hip-hop, dance. It’s back to the roots,” she told Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” about her first rap album since 1998’s Order in the Court.

“It’s like all the original Queen Latifah, ‘U.N.I.T.Y.,’ ‘Ladies First’ feel, but bring that to now,” added the host of Wednesday’s 35th Annual People’s Choice Awards. “It’s sick, it’s a banger!”

The 38-year-old entertainer, whose real name is Dana Owens, made her musical debut in 1989 with All Hail the Queen, an album that spawned the female anthem “Ladies First.” Her arguably most-acclaimed hit came in 1994 when she released the Grammy Award-winning “U.N.I.T.Y.” off Black Reign.
